Plantronics new headset is a winner!

The new Plantronics Voyager Pro is the best headset. There I said it. I’ve been trying all kinds of headsets since my Motorola HS710 died on me the other day. As it turns out, it wasn’t really dead. That’s a story for another day. I am currently using an iPhone 3G and I was looking for the headset that would sound the best period. It had to sound good both ways, meaning that the caller had to sound good to me and I had to sound good to them as well. It’s not as easy a task as you may think. I tried 3 “high-end” headsets before my friend at Plantronics showed me the light. Here’s a quick summary.

Aliph Jawbone – These are well know for their “noise is nothing” campaign. They have amazing noise cancellation technologies so that you sound great to the person on the other end. You can be in a noisy bar or standing next to a weed whacker and you’ll still sound good. The problem lies in the other direction. The volume of this headset is not very high and if you are by a weed whacker, you will not be able to hear the other person. Couple that with the fact that the design is so minimal that you can’t figure out where the buttons are and you may not love this unit so much. I tired on for many months and about the 6th time that it was dead when I needed it because I had left it on by accident, I decided to eBay it.

Motorola HS710/HS715 – I tried both of these and discovered that they are basically the same unit except for the color. these are great all around headsets. They have the flip out boom microphone that also turns it on and off. It’s a brilliant design. These kinda hang off your ear so some may not find it so secure. I used these for years and was going to get another when I thought I would experiment with newer technology.

Motorola Pure H25 – This looked like a winner. So tiny with that patented boom microphone and then also a new noise cancellation technology. The first night I tried it I called my brother in law. From a perfectly quiet house at night, he told me my voice was breaking up! OK, that was all it took. Next one…

Plantronics 925 – This unique “V” boom headset sits in your ear, weighs nothing and is the recommendation of the folks in the Apple store. OK, I’ll give it a go. It fits well enough, but how was the sound quality? Again I called my brother in law (becoming my control group) and talked to him at night. Sounds good he says! So far so good. Then I called him on 2 other occasions from the car and outside. He said I sounded robotic, like something was muffling my voice. Later on, the clipping began. OK, coupled with the fact that I hate the on/off single button control, this one was no longer a candidate.

Plantronics Voyager Pro – This is where my friend came in. He saw my posts about the problems with the 925. You see, my friend is a sales executive at Plantronics. He offered to send me a new Voyager Pro to try. How could I resist? To make a long story short, it’s been over a month and I am still happy with how it performs. It’s got the same issue with the button to turn it on and off, but the sound quality is superb. It’s plenty loud and the people I call can’t tell I am on a headset! That is the highest compliment you could offer in this realm.

So, end of the day – I highly recommend the Plantronics Voyager Pro. It rocks.
